About Columbia Farm Fence

Columbia Farm Fence is a locally owned fence contractor working the farm ground of Boone County and mid-Missouri. We build field and woven wire, high-tensile and electric, barbed wire, board and rail, welded pipe and corrals, and farm gates and entrances, and we clear the line and pull the old fence before the new one starts. What you are keeping in decides the build. A cow leans on a fence, a horse charges it, a goat works the bottom of it, and no single spec answers all three.

Most of the failed fence we get called out to look at failed at the same place. Nobody built an end assembly, so the corner leaned in toward the pull and every strand behind it went slack. We build ends first on every job and let the rest of the run follow. Wire comes to tension on a strainer. Posts go below the frost line with the backfill tamped in layers, never floated in a concrete collar.

Two kinds of ground sit inside our service area. Down along the Missouri River, from Rocheport west toward New Franklin, the bottoms are deep loess and alluvium. They dig easy and hold a post loosely, and high water rearranges anything a crew did not plan for. Up out of the valley it turns to claypan: a foot of silt loam over heavy clay that swells wet and shrinks dry. That clay grips a well-set post hard and pushes a shallow one out over a few winters. One county, two jobs.

Missouri's general fence law applies here, and it puts the fence on the owner of the livestock. Some counties elsewhere in the state kept the older shared rules instead. We are happy to explain how it works in plain language before you talk to a neighbor about a line, and we will tell you when the question belongs with your county rather than with a fence crew.

We carry a Missouri license and insurance on every job, and the estimate is written before anything gets dug: footage, fence type, corner count, and clearing. When an existing fence only needs new braces and a retension, we will say so. That is a cheaper job and sometimes it is the right one.
